Green Science Implementation in Herbal and Cosmetic Industry

In order to embody sustainable resources in product developing, manufacturing, and result, Martha Tilaar Innovation Center (MTIC) develop green science concept for PT Martina Berto Tbk. This concept devided into four phase which includes product development steps from beginning to the end. One of those is Green Resources.

Green resources is the first step taken in product development process in Martina Berto Tbk. It aims to obtain sustainable environmental friendly supply. Green resouces consists of five part:

Green Knowledge

Green knowledge talk about aspects that relevant to efforts in life in order to give minumum impact to environment. In PT Martina Berto Tbk, plants utilization derived from green knowledge in the society and later to be researched, from cultivation stage, harvest and pre-harvest standarization, and its active ingredients.

 Green Cultivation and Organic Farming

Plant cultivation is one of natural conservation that often missed in plant material utilization. Green cultivation is a plant production system based on biologically nutrient recycling. This system is usually entailed with organic farming, a chemical-free farm that could damage environment.

 As local company that wants to give contributions to environment conservation, Martha Tilaar Group didn’t want to miss this part. Kampoeng Djamoe Organik (KaDO) in Cikarang has been implemented organic agriculture. This 10 hectares land is utilizing production waste as its ingredient to make organic mulch, replacing syntetic chemical mulch. Plant cultivation control with plant rotation also implemented to cut pest growth spesifically.    

Plant Material Standarization

Standarization of plants raw materials starts from harvest to post harvest process. The aim of this activity is to get raw material that fulfill quality standard that has been determined.  Post harvest management including sorting, washing, prossesing, drying, packing, and storing.

Green Research

In running research, especially one that related to natural raw material development, PT Martina Berto Tbk is really concern about plants life continuity. For example, avoiding plants usage which clasified as prone chategory based on Convention in International Trade of Endangered Species (CITIES) and using only the safe part like leaf, fruit, and root, so it we didn’t break the plant’s life.

Recycled Packaging

The packaging material that PT Martina Berto Tbk used is not only need to fulfill international regulation, but also should be environmental friendly, recyclable and useable. General material that commonly used are made of Ethylene Terephralate (PET), High density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) and Poly Propylene (PP). We also have bag that is made of hyacinth which produced by local community in Yogyakarta.
